The Great Lakes and Great Lakes’ residents are at imminent risk of social and ecological disaster.

Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline transports 22 million gallons of crude oil and natural gas liquids across 645 miles from Superior, Wisconsin through Michigan and back to Canada. Every. Single. Day. In the last 50 years, the pipeline has had dozens of spills, releasing more than 1.1 million gallons of toxic oil into the environment. Line 5 is nearing 70 years old; 20 years beyond its designed lifetime and needs to be shut down.

Line 5 crosses directly through the heart of the Great Lakes, putting 84% of North America’s surface freshwater at risk. Where Line 5 crosses the Straits of Mackinac, a spill would quickly affect a significant amount of shoreline and open water in Lake Michigan or Lake Huron. Line 5 lies in one of the worst possible places in the world for a crude oil spill to occur.
